"Peace is possible... it can begin simply over a game of chess and a cup of tea." - Mattie
Oprah's Tribute to Mattie J. T. Stepanek

A tribute to Mattie J.T. Stepanek, Oprah's Favorite Guest who passed on June 22, 2004 in the arms of his mother at the age of 13. A few days later in his Maryland hometown, Oprah joined hundreds of Mattie's admirers to celebrate his life. When Mattie's hero, former President Jimmy Carter, spoke to the crowd, he said, "We have known kings and queens. We've known presidents and prime ministers. But the most extraordinary person whom I have ever known in my life was Mattie Stepanek."

Mattie's Influence Around the Globe

In 2011, the Foundation launched a "For Our World Campaign" to have Mattie's 9/11 poetry translated into languages for people around the world. Mattie's poem has been translated into dozens of languages now, from Albanian to Zulu. In 2012, Mattie's Peace Club (a Foundation membership with categories for people of all ages) and a Peace Certification Program were both launched.

The Just Peace Summit is an international youth mentoring project that grew from Mattie's final book; the project has positively impacted millions around the world through "basic needs peace projects" created by Global Teen Leaders who learn about Mattie and his message of hope and peace.

Peace Club Kids & Teens worldwide are invited to share poetry and artwork, photographs and peace posts, that are displayed on our Peace Club Kids and Peace Club Teens webpages.

An Apostle of Hope and Peace on Earth
Mattie chose St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes, as his patron saint when he was confirmed. Inspired by St. Jude, Mattie lived his life as an apostle of hope and peace, lighting its fire in the hearts of countless many.
